If you look back 50 years ago, many jobs required humans to complete tasks. For example, production lines in factories or hand painting artwork for publishing materials. Craftsmanship was the norm and, although technology was rapidly advancing, no one realised the effects it would have. They certainly wouldn’t have predicted 3D printers or even everyday things that we think nothing of, like online banking.
Considering the creative industry is one of the fastest growing parts of the UK economy; the amount of work that is completed on computer screens is staggering. Unfortunately – what seems to be a dying art – creative craftsmanship is a largely underappreciated skill, highlighting the true importance in keeping it alive.
Arts and crafts should be encouraged more amongst young people and students. Hand-making a decoration takes a keen eye for detail and a creative streak. Making a striking Christmas wreath doesn’t mean throwing on every coloured ribbon, glitter or pine cone.
