Q&A with our Managing Director, Marcus Dunn

Our Director Marcus Dunn has been working in the business for over 17 years, so we thought it was about time we gave an insight to his background and how Lumiere became established!

What inspired you to start Lumiere Events?
I had been working in the business as a franchise for another company for many years and realised there was an opportunity to be a stand alone business. It gave me a chance to really consider the brand, what I wanted from the business and an opportunity to drive change and new ideas.

How long has Lumiere been in operation?
Although I have been in the business for a very long time, I established Lumiere over seven years ago

What has been your favourite project you have worked on?
I am a huge Chelsea fan so when Chelsea FC asked us to work with them, I couldn’t believe our luck. We have been working for them ever since and every time we are lighting up the West Stand, I still can’t believe I am there. Borough Market is also a favourite of mine, I love the area, every year is different and the team there are brilliant to work with.

How many members are in the Lumiere team?
We have around 20 people working across the team, split between the workshop in Cobham and the onsite teams

What is the strangest request you have had?
Believe it or not, we have had quite a few over the years including a ‘bat out of hell’ themed Christmas display for Dominion Theatre’s Meat Loaf musical, a six metre tree decorated with red roses for an ITV commercial and one of my favourites; wrap the television centre in a giant red bow!

How long is a standard installation?
It all depends on the budget and whether it is interior or exterior decoration. For a 7.5ft lit and decorated artificial tree, fireplace garland and perhaps some staircase garland, it will take around half a day. Most of the residential work we do is a combination of both and we usually have a team on site for most of the day.

What is the most popular light/decoration?
Branch wrapping and hedge lighting together with E27 golf ball lights are popular as they give a great effect across the roofline of a property. Festoon lighting is also quite popular for outdoor lighting, both in residential and commercial projects.

Do you have the best decorated house in your road?
Since our twin girls were born, I haven’t really had a choice. It is often the last to be decorated but, obviously it’s the best. Last year the girls asked for a giant red bow above the front door, which I was happy to do, much better than sparkling pink!
